Chapter 19
Violet
Catching Iris in my arms, I allowed the tears to flow as she hugged herself to me tightly. Seeing her left no doubt that she was Roseâs daughter. Except for her hair, she looked exactly like my sister, like me, when we were the same age. I brought my eyes to Monroe and saw the emotion on his face as he watched us embrace. She was tiny for her age, and as I stood with her in my arms, I knew she was home.
âIâm so happy to meet you,â I told Iris, and the little girl pulled back and placed her small hands onto my cheeks.
âYou look like Mommy,â she remarked and hugged herself to me again.
Her small body quivered in my hold, and I looked to Monroe for guidance. I didnât know anything about being a parent to a child. He stepped up, sensing my nerves. Placing a tattooed hand on my back, he rubbed gently as he spoke to Iris.
âHey, Iris. How have you been?â
She turned and rested her head on my shoulder, refusing to let go of her grip on me as she spoke. âI missed you. Did you see they fixed my hair? The lady used to dye it red and I hated it,â she asked and lifted a blonde lock to show him. He smiled briefly before she asked, âWhy didnât you come to visit like you promised?â
He cleared his throat, and I took the lead, not wanting her to be upset with him. âHe was with me, making sure we were ready to bring you home with us. Iâm sorry, sweetheart.â
Iris pulled back and looked from me to him before she spoke, her angelic voice soothing the painful memories of abandonment. âIs Mommy going to live with us too?â
I briefly closed my eyes and then opened them to see her staring at me, waiting for an answer. âIs it okay if we sit down and talk?â
Iris nodded, and I carried her to the small patio on the side of the house. Her foster mother had been watching from the side door, and she smiled, giving me a nod before she closed the screen door and allowed us some privacy. I knew Devlin was responsible for the good home Iris was placed in, and he was the one who made today possible. I assumed the foster mother was aware of the situation and I was grateful she wasnât prying on our meeting.
I sat down, and Iris turned sideways in my lap as she smacked her small hand on the seat next to us and looked at Monroe expectantly. He sat down and looked to me for guidance. I wanted to ask where Rose was, but she said it was a secret. I needed her to trust me enough to tell me where my sister was, so I could finally bring her back home to us.
âI want so much to bring your mommy home with us, but I donât know where she is.â Iris looked down at her lap, and I lifted her head to me.
